Hundreds of welds transform steel into a metallic skin, revealed from within by light.

Sype 017 is built from fine steel bars individually welded together. On the inside, the welds are ground back to allow light to pass through; on the outside, they are deliberately left raw, creating an irregular surface reminiscent of woven metal. Illuminated from within, this steel skin reveals its relief, its openings and the traces of its making.

Sype's Thoughts
With Sype 017, I wanted to work with steel almost as one would work with textile. The small bars are assembled one by one, and the welds become part of the material itself. On the inside, I grind them back to allow the light to emerge; on the outside, I preserve their raw relief. I like this contrast: the same welding process can create a rough surface on one side and reveal light on the other.
