Artistic Approach
Steel & Light — A Sensitive Exploration of Material
Where Material Meets Light
Sype Design grew from a personal exploration of the dialogue between raw steel and light.
Before working with metal, I spent many years exploring light as a still-life advertising photographer. That experience continues to influence every piece I create. Here, light is not simply used to illuminate; it reveals the material and shapes the way the object is perceived.
Raw steel became a natural choice. Its density, its response to oxidation and its ability to absorb or reflect light make it a living material, never entirely fixed.
Light Sculptures Before Lighting Objects
Each piece is conceived as a balance between function and artistic presence:
tension between geometry and material
interaction between shadow, reflection and diffused light
dialogue between industrial aesthetics and the softness of light
The intention is not simply to illuminate, but to create an atmosphere — a subtle presence within the space.
Handcrafted in the Studio
Every piece is made by hand in my studio:
- cutting and shaping raw steel
- manual welding and assembly
- patinas, oxidation and specific finishes
- technical integration of LED lighting
Each piece carries the natural variations of handwork and material. The inherent irregularities of steel are part of the artwork, contributing to its character and identity.
At the Crossroads of Design, Sculpture & Decorative Art
My influences lie at the intersection of:
industrial architecture
fundamental geometric forms
the photographic exploration of light
a personal search for contrast between material and immaterial
This approach deliberately places each work between functional lighting, collectible design, contemporary sculpture and a singular decorative object.
A Signature: Revealing Material Through Light
Through Sype Design, I continue to explore a simple idea:
how light reveals material,
and how material transforms light.
Each piece is conceived to endure, to become part of demanding contemporary interiors, and to create a luminous presence that is at once strong, sensitive and timeless.
Discover how these principles take shape through my light sculptures.
