Éclipse Sonore — handcrafted light sculpture in metal, a signature work by Sype Design.

A signature work where layered metal forms, indirect light and shadow merge into a constantly changing sculptural presence.

A Signature Light Sculpture

Éclipse Sonore brings together several years of Sype’s exploration of metal, light and layered forms. Conceived as a light sculpture rather than a conventional lighting object, it combines overlapping circular volumes with carefully controlled indirect light.

The composition is built around contrast: solid and void, illuminated and dark surfaces, raw metal and reflected light. As the viewer moves around the piece, these relationships shift, revealing new depths and changing perceptions of the sculpture.

Éclipse Sonore marks a defining point in Sype Design’s artistic language — where sculpture, light and craftsmanship become inseparable. Rather than illuminating the space alone, the work uses light to shape its own presence within it.

Layered Forms, a Sculptural Language

Layering is central to the visual language of Éclipse Sonore. Steel discs overlap, shift and intersect without merging, each remaining distinct while contributing to a composition in constant visual movement.

Light does not simply illuminate these forms. It passes between them, catches their edges and reveals the tension created by their overlapping volumes. Depending on the viewing angle, some surfaces absorb the light while others reflect it, continuously altering the perception of depth.

This construction is neither decorative nor arbitrary. It results from an intuitive exploration of proportion, rhythm and visual balance, bringing raw steel, volume and light together in a sculptural composition that changes with the viewer’s position.

Light as a Sculptural Material

In Éclipse Sonore, light is not added to the sculpture as a separate element. It is part of the composition itself — shaping volumes, revealing edges and creating tension between solid forms and empty space.

Placed between the steel discs, the light source remains almost invisible. Light circulates through the layered forms, disappears and reappears, catching polished surfaces while leaving others in shadow. The sculpture therefore changes according to the viewer’s position, distance and the surrounding light.

This interplay of light, shadow and reflection gives Éclipse Sonore a constantly evolving presence. Rather than functioning as a conventional lighting object, it explores sculptural lighting as a relationship between material, space and perception.

Light becomes a living material — revealed through overlapping forms, projected shadows and reflections across the metal surfaces.

Handcrafted Metal Sculpture, Built Through Experimentation

Creating without a fixed design, allowing the form to emerge

Each sculpture begins with an intention rather than a finished drawing. I start with an idea — a lamp, a floor lamp or a mirror — and a dominant form, but without defining the final object in advance.

The first elements are assembled directly in the workshop: steel discs, circles, offcuts and fragments waiting to find their place. At this stage, the work remains open. It is a process of exploration.

As the material is handled, a direction begins to emerge. Some combinations work, others do not. Parts are assembled, dismantled and rebuilt until the right balance between form, light and function appears.

This experimentation is not lost time. It is an integral part of the process.

Once the sculptural balance has been found, a second stage begins: turning that form into an object that is durable, serviceable and technically coherent. Access to the light sources, LED replacement, structural strength and the relationship between metal and light all become part of the design.

I do not create a finished design digitally and then simply manufacture it. I build the metal sculpture first, then resolve the technical challenges created by the form. This approach allows each work to remain unique while avoiding mechanical repetition.

Each piece develops through a continuous dialogue between artistic intuition, handcrafted metalwork and technical decisions.

This is how Sype’s light sculptures emerge: singular objects designed not only to be seen, but to function, endure and evolve with light.

From Workshop to Finished Sculpture

At a certain point in the process, experimentation gives way to resolution. The forms no longer need to be added or removed. The proportions settle, tensions become balanced and light begins to move naturally through the composition.

This is the moment when Éclipse Sonore becomes an autonomous work. Each element has found its place; empty space becomes as important as the metal itself.

The final stage is not about adding complexity, but refining what is already there. Surfaces are finished, details adjusted and the relationship between light, material and shadow carefully balanced.

The sculpture is then ready to leave the workshop.

Designed for Durability and Maintenance

A light sculpture cannot exist without rigorous technical consideration.

Once the visual balance has been achieved, another stage begins: ensuring that the work remains functional, durable and maintainable over time.

Each piece is designed to allow access to the light sources, replacement or maintenance of the LEDs, partial disassembly without altering the sculpture’s appearance, and reliable mechanical stability.

The technical solution never dictates the form. It adapts to it with precision.

In Éclipse Sonore, the lighting system is integrated within the structure. Fixings, wiring and assembly points are designed to remain discreet while allowing the work to be maintained over time.

This technical discipline is inseparable from the artistic process: creating singular works conceived not only for their visual presence, but also to endure well beyond their first illumination.

Éclipse Sonore — A Foundational Work by Sype Design

Éclipse Sonore is more than an individual work. It marks the point where Sype’s exploration of metal, light and form came together into a distinct sculptural language.

It brings together several years of experimentation: layered forms, light treated as a material, and a constant dialogue between technical precision and artistic intuition.

Rather than defining a fixed style, Éclipse Sonore established principles that continue throughout Sype Design’s work: volumes held in tension, integrated rather than decorative light, and a sculptural presence that changes with space and viewpoint.

As a foundational work, it opened the way for the light sculptures that followed while remaining a singular, autonomous piece.

It is not a work that seeks to demonstrate. It is a work that asserts its presence.

Conceived to endure, Éclipse Sonore continues to reveal different relationships between metal, light and shadow long after its first illumination.

Éclipse Sonore is a contemporary light sculpture by Sype Design, handcrafted in France. This foundational work brings together metal sculpture, sculptural lighting and collectible design through an intuitive, artisanal approach to light and form.

Created for distinctive interiors and considered spaces, Éclipse Sonore exists at the intersection of contemporary art, light and handcrafted metalwork.
